Interactive ways of teaching English” workshop
















Narmina Alieva UGRAD alumna’ 09 sparked teachers, students of Faculty of Foreign Languages to take a part in interesting and unique workshop: “Interactive ways of teaching English”. In this workshop participants have learned a lot. Workshop begun in interesting way: like sharing about yourself to your partner by means of answering questions from cards. Everybody could share with her or his experience with group and make them aware about interesting ways of teaching English.

Results: in this 1-30 hour workshop participants learned:
· How to make lesson more interesting for children and students
· Ways of using games in lesson
· And a lot of interactive ways of teaching

Participants were so inspired by participating and they required to have more

Distributed materials: disks on methods of teaching English.

High school students of private school Amid exploring the American Corner Khujand




Today American Corner Khujand hosted 15 high school students and 2 techers of private school Amid. They have visited AC for first time and were excited to find more information regarding American Corner Khujand's resources.

This was great opportunity for AC and visitors - teens to find such kind of place which has unique resources and a lot of educational purpose opportunities. They were s.parked to cone reguarly to AC!:)

Outreach program at school # 7
















Where: Secondary school # 7
When: 19th of January at 10:00 am
Who: high school students and teachers of school # 7

Duration: 1 hour

Total number of attendance: 22 prs.

Goal: In order to enlarge the number of visitors to American Corner Khujand and introduce them American Corner’s resources and programs that would be interesting for high school students and English Language teachers.

Tools: Power Point Presentation “American Corner Khujand’s best experiences”, introducing programs to students and teachers.

Results:
· 19 high school students sparked to come to American Corner Khujand and use all recourses that are offering by AC, improve their language skills and learn more about U.S.A., also encouraged to apply to Benjamin Franklin
· 3 English Language teachers found out more about Mentor program, TEA program and SUSI program (also one teacher – Zaripova is an alumna of TEA program)
· Both – students and teachers sparked to apply to those programs that were announced

Martin Luther King Jr. B-Day

American Corner Khujand in observation of Martin Luther King Jr.’s day sparked youth to take a part in event devoted to this day. This event engaged them to listen for the video by Martin Luther King Jr. “I have a dream” that was downloaded from YouTube. The second part of the event was spreading information regarding Martin Luther King Jr. Day. Educational handouts was indeed useful for all students, because they have learned a lot of interesting about this great leader and improved their vocabulary, solved puzzles and wrote their dreams and what they can do for their own society in a piece of paper. Finally group divided into two groups in order to discuss about “I have a dream” video, and speak out what they have got. Groups also chose their own leader and these leaders had their own speech: “I have a dream and I can help by……”. Both leaders had wonderful speeches. Leaders are: Shahnoza Fathullozoda and Moni Mukimi active volunteers of American Corner Khujand.
Results:
· Students got useful information regarding Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
· They improved their ELS
· Improved leadership skills by means of having speeches

Essay writing workshop
















American Corner Khujand in collaboration with UGRAD alumna – Masuda Sobitova organized the 1 hour workshop on “Essay writing”. Students learned :
Essay structure
How to begin essay
About parts of the essay
How to make a draft essay and how to revise it
Body and conclusion of the essay

During this one hour students also listen for the audio of how to write and make edition of the essay, actually how to be success in essay writing.

Results:
13 students clarified the main points and parts of the essay writing process.
Having been participated in this workshop they change their opinion and way of writing essay to best way

Web- chat on Public Library Innovation Program




American Corner Khujand on 14th of January joined the web-chat with Rima Kupryte regarding PLIP. During this 1 hour web-chat librarians of Asiri library found a lot of interesting information regarding project proposal. Questions around the world was indeed useful. Due being in English language American Corner is going to provide them with the recorded web-chat and translate it into Russian in order to make questions that wasn’t open enough for them more clearly.
Results:
· Librarians got a lot of useful information regarding PLIP that sparked them to apply for this project and win a grant.
· This web-chat made them aware about another libraries in the world

Public Library Innovation project explanation

American Corner Khujand got a chance to give more information to librarians about Public Library Innovation program and present them main idea of the program, introduce librarians with the application form and make them sparked to apply for this unique program. Main idea of gathering them was also to let them know about web-chat and that librarians have a really great opportunity to ask questions regarding project.

Results:
· Librarians starting to work at project
· They starting to preparing questions for web-chat
· They presenting really great ideas that could be designed as a project

FINCA presentation







American Corner Khujand hosted a guest – Paul Hamlin General Director FINCA MDO Tajikistan.
He had an interesting and productive presentation about FINCA organization. The office of FINCA will be opened in February. Students got a lot of interesting information regarding loan and who can borrow money. This 1 hour presentation showed statistical numbers about getting loans around the world. Students through Q&A found interesting facts about microfinance organizations and FINCA particularly.
Results:
· Getting more information about microfinance organizations
· Students learned how they can borrow money and who can borrow money






This presentation sparked our students to get a loans in future and work in FINCA as well too.

Benjamin Franklin Summer Institute

Benjamin Franklin Summer InstituteTAJIKISTAN


Application Deadline: 5 February 2010Students are invited to apply for participation in the Benjamin Franklin Summer Institute in the United States in the summer of 2010. The Institute will bring together approximately 45 students, ages 16–18. The Institute will host 35 students from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan—seven students from each of these five countries—who will be joined at the Institute by 10 competitively selected Americans. Activities will include discussions of global issues of common interest, leadership and media training, collaborative project development, community service, educational travel, and plans for follow-on activities. The Institute will be three to four weeks in duration between late June and late August. The program will be intensive, academic, and highly interactive. The program sponsors seek energetic applicants who are ready to develop their skills in order to be effective leaders in their schools and communities.

Students who may apply are those who:

• will be at least 16 years old and not more than 18 years old by July 1, 2010;

• are proficient in the English language;• demonstrate strong leadership potential and interest in international relations or diplomacy;

• have permission from their parents to participate in the entire program.

Instructions for completing this application: Please fill out the application as completely as possible, in English. The information you provide on this application will form the basis for selecting semifinalists for this program. Answer the questions carefully and completely. Questions about the application process, as well as completed applications, should be submitted to:

Exchange connect and Work and travel presentation

Speaker: Madina Pulatova and Isfandiyor Boboev

Duration: 1 hour

Total number of attendance: 22 person (9 boys and 13 girls)

One more exchange connect contest presentation at American Corner Khujand made participants of the presentation sparked to be involved to participate and create their own video.
Work and travel presentation amazed them, because they found that can participate and see U.S. by thiir own eyes.
Also they was happy to find that this program will give them a real chance to earn money and see how the economics of the U.S. works. Photos that was shown by Isfandiyor Boboev make them smile: seeing such places like: Bush Garden, NY stores, banks of the Atlantic see, preparing osh and etc. Presentation clarified questions like:
· Who can participate
· How can participate
· What should bring
· How this program will help them
· Main idea was appointed on what that this program helps exchanging cultures between our cultures Tajik and American


Results: - finding information about exchange connect contest
- using exchange connect web-site in order to upload their own videos by 12th of January
- sparked to participate in work and travel program
- made them motivated to achieve their goals.

As Parvina Zoidova said : “Listening this presentation and watching the photos made me filling great, I didn’t realize when I was coming to AC that it will be so gorgeous”
